Wall Insulation – Achieving 0.30 U-value using SuperQuilt

Insulating walls can be just as important as insulating your loft, or your pitched roof. Properties built around the 1930s or before are likely to have zero insulation in the walls. In addition to this, usually there is not the opportunity to fill the cavities with a glass fibre insulation.

Are my walls solid, or have a cavity?

If you can see the brickwork on the outside of the house, study the brickwork.

If your property has solid walls, the bricks will have an alternating pattern. You will be able to see some of the smaller ends from the outside.

If your property has cavity walls, the bricks will all be laid length-ways.

Requirements for Building Regulations

Local authority building regulations will have certain requirements on Solid Wall projects. The measurement of heat loss is called a U-value. A U-value is a calculation of the heat loss (in watts) per square metre. Current building regulations requirements for Solid Walls is to surpass a 0.30w/m² (U-value)

Installation Recommendation

  •  Install timber battens onto solid wall. To find the required batten for your project, please visit our Online U-value Calculator
  • Staple SuperQuilt to the timber battens as a continuous layer, stapling at min 300mm internals.
  • Ensure SuperQuilt has min 50mm overlaps. Tape and seal using Thermaseal Foil Joining Tape. Once taped, SuperQuilt will work as a High Performance VCL (Vapour Control Layer)
  • Install counter battens over SuperQuilt Insulation, running perpendicular to the first battens
  • Install Plasterboard Finish
